On the hill below the Overlook is the original main entrance to Greystone. It now faces onto the Croton Aqueduct hiking trail. The gardens around the gatehouse are being restored.
Leading up from the main gate is a long, zig-zag road that once allowed carriages to ascend the steep hill to Greystone. Along the road, the outside of the Walled Garden and the Temple of the Sky come into view.
In the early 1900s, “Temples of Love” were popular in the gardens of large estates. This one, with its elegant wrought-iron canopy, sits on a cantilevered base above a man-made grotto, five waterfalls, and six cascades. At the top is a spectacular view of the gardens, the Hudson River, and the Palisades.
