Gardens at the north end of Naumkeag

This week, we’re looking at the gardens to the upper left on this map.

Mountains. Warned you.

Is this intended to be scary? Because he’s adorable.

Tucked away inside the Chinese Garden: a very old, completely nonfunctioning swimming pool.

Just outside the Chinese Garden: a fountain with a view.

Such a funny, funny lawn / garden / path combo. The rose bushes pop up in the middle of the path.

Greenhouse, where it won’t interrupt the view.

Um hmmm, more mountains.

Next week: The Mount, Edith Wharton’s “Berkshire cottage”.

More

  • Back in the summer of 2020, when most museums were still in lockdown or requiring masks, I discovered the pleasures of spending time in elaborate, exquisitely planned gardens. My first excursion was to the Berkshires in western Massachusetts, where I visited the Gilded Age mansions of Naumkeag, Ventfort, and The Manor. I shared photos of these on Facebook, but I prefer to have my photos on my site. I’ve shifted Ventfort (here and here). The Mount will follow, starting next week.
