Upcoming talks at Resurrecting Romanticism, Oct. 7-9, 2023

Coming in October: an arts conference I can’t wait to attend! The theme is romanticism in the visual arts, music, and literature.

David Berry and Harry Binswanger will talk on musical esthetics. Stephen Siek will discuss Rachmaninoff. Sandra Shaw will talk on sculpture. I’ll talk on Romanticism and Painting. The teaser video for that talk is here.

Special programs will honor Rachmaninoff on the 150th anniversary of his birth, and the 130th anniversary of the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893. (The conference will be held on Columbus Day weekend.) I’ll be giving a talk on painting at the 1893 Exposition (teaser here), and will also participate in a panel discussion, “Nurturing the New Romantics” (teaser here).

Linda Cordair will talk on visiting art galleries, Thomas Shoebotham on Paganini and the virtuoso tradition, John Gillis on Ayn Rand and Romanticism. There will be a panel discussion & symposium on problems of musical meaning.

Evening programs include live performances of romantic chamber music and romantic opera, with a premiere of a new opera by David Berry that’s based on an O. Henry short story. Shoshana Milgram will talk about the story beforehand.

This is going to be so exciting!

Deadline for early registration (with a discount) is midnight August 15th.

Events will take place at Converse University’s Petrie School of Music in Spartanburg, SC. For more events & more details, check out the conference website. The Facebook page for Resurrecting Romanticism has up-to-the-minute details.
