About This Site

A few words about what I do and why I do it.

Art history

As an art historian, I constantly seek out art that’s inspiring, thought-provoking, skillfully executed, and/or beautiful so I can share it with others who need and enjoy such art, but who don’t have time to search for it themselves. I have a Ph.D., but I’ve never worked in academia, and I pride myself on speaking jargon-free language.

I’ve been sending out a set of four Sunday Recommendations every week since mid-2017. For samples, see the Favorite Recommendations & Photos tag. This page has details on how to join the Sunday Recommendations list, and how to support my work and receive rewards.

History & more

I also write and lecture on history,

As an independent scholar, writer, and lecturer, I love to go from the nitty-gritty details to the big picture. I’ve published five books on Alexander Hamilton that rely heavily on primary sources: see the list here. Most recently I published Timeline 1900-2021: Events Worldwide, US Politics & Culture, Economics, Science & Technology, Books, Visual Arts, Architecture, Film & TV, Music. I’ve also made forays into food, politics, publishing, cryptocurrencies, and much more. For a list of my publications (including the recent works pictured at the head of this post), see the Books and Essays page and my Amazon page. All my books are also available via Ingram.

Many thanks to my supporters at the $25/month level:
