Brookgreen Gardens, June 2020: part 1

I’ve posted on Brookgreen Gardens before (see here), cropping the photos to show just the sculptures. But one of the marvelous features of Brookgreen is that many of the sculptures have a small garden specifically designed to set them off. In this series of posts, with photos taken in early June when the gardens were full of flowers, I’m trying to give a sense of those gorgeous settings.

Circle of Life, 2001

By Harold “Tuck” Langland (b. 1939). According to the label: “Using the metaphor of dance, this group of four figures represents the cycles of human life, four seasons, four elements, and four directions.”

Wind on Water, 1992

By Richard McDermott Miller (1922-2004). The label notes that this is a draped version of The Spacewalker, an earlier work by Miller that represented a nude figure stepping out into space. Brookgreen has a bronze version of Spacewalker, not far from Wind on Water – it will appear in part 2 of this post. You can get a sense in this photo of how much space this sculpture has around it!

Ring of Bright Water [date not given]

By Kent Ullberg (b. 1945), a native of Sweden. This sculpture was inspired by Gavin Maxwell’s Ring of Bright Water. What a lovely composition!
