Honors a governor of New York who exposed the corruption of New York City’s Tweed Ring in the 1860s and ran for president in 1876, winning a majority of the popular vote but losing in the electoral college by a single vote to Rutherford B. Hayes.

Tilden was the driving force behind the creation of the New York Public Library, to which he bequeathed six million dollars and his enormous book collection.
