The Hall of Fame was established by New York University as a pantheon for notable American men and women. Dedicated in 1901, it holds 97 busts of notable Americans. The colonnade in which they’re sheltered was designed in the Beaux Arts style by noted architect Stanford White. The Hall of Fame is now administered by Bronx Community College, to which NYU transferred the campus in 1973.
The inscription over the entrance reads, “Mighty men which were of old, men of renown” – a perfectly nice stand-alone quote for the Hall of Fame. In its context (Genesis 6.4), it’s more ambiguous: many believe it refers to the children born by human women to fallen angels.
