This is one of many memorials erected by New York City neighborhoods to honor husbands, brothers, fathers, and friends who died during the Great War. Among about 30 others are the Chelsea Park Memorial, the Inwood Memorial, and the 107th Infantry Memorial. For more on World War I memorials, see From Portraits to Puddles, 3: Coast Guard Memorial.

On the reasons for the dearth of memorials after World War II, see From Portraits to Puddles, 7: Memorials to NYPD and NY Vietnam Veterans.
