One of the great delights of wandering a museum in person (rather than online or in a book) is serendipity. I hadn’t realized the gilded plaster cast of Sherman’s Memorial to Robert Gould Shaw and the Massachusetts Fifty-Fourth is now at the National Gallery: I’d seen the original on Boston Common years ago, and seen this plaster years ago at the Saint Gaudens National Historic Site – which is worth a trip if you’re a fan of Saint Gaudens or sculpture in general.)
The National Gallery’s site gives an overview and offers a few pics that unfortunately don’t capture the glow of the gilding – which has the lovely luster that Saint Gaudens’s Sherman in New York has since its recent renovation.
Alas, without lighting equipment, my pics don’t capture the glow either. You’ll just have to go see it yourself.
I found (as I often do) that framing details for a photo made me look more sharply at them than I would if I didn’t have a camera in hand. All the photos below are copyright (c) 2016 Dianne L. Durante.
